Travel Scam: 100 Chabad Victims of Fake Airline Tickets
Over 100 Chabad Chassidim in Israel recently fell victim to a travel scam perpetrated by an individual posing as a travel agent named Shy Sandik, who sold fraudulent airline tickets. Some travelers even found themselves stranded in London when their connecting flights turned out to be invalid • Full Story
Passengers paid in advance and received tickets via email that appeared legitimate, only to discover at the airport that they were not registered in any airline system.
Several victims, who had booked connecting flights through the scammer, were left stranded mid-journey. For many, these trips were critical for visiting Crown Heights during the month of Tishrei to be near The Rebb, resulting in significant distress and disruption.
Following accumulated complaints, the Israel Police acted and arrested Sandik in Afula on suspicion of large-scale fraud. In parallel, Chabad travel agents are now assisting affected travelers in arranging safe travel to Crown Heights.
Chabad communities are urging heightened caution when purchasing airline tickets, emphasizing that tickets should only be bought from licensed and trusted agents or directly from the airline.
