“The Meron of Ukraine”: Lag BaOmer Celebrated By The Miteler Rebbe
For more than 200 years, a well-known tradition among the Jews of Ukraine and Russia has been to travel on Lag BaOmer to receive blessings for children at the Ohel of The Mitteler Rebbe • Full Story
“As is known,” writes the Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach in Hayom Yom, “Lag BaOmer was one of the outstanding festivals by the Mitteler Rebbe. Many miracles were witnessed then, most of them connected to children, and throughout the entire year people anticipated and awaited Lag BaOmer.”
The tradition continued even after the passing of the Mitteler Rebbe, as thousands of Jews from across Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia would travel every year on Lag BaOmer to his resting place in Nezhin, in Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, to pray for children. Remarkably, the custom continued even during the harsh years of Communist rule.
This year as well, despite the tziyon being located in eastern Ukraine near active combat zones, dozens of Jews from across the country made the journey to continue the longstanding tradition. Among them were groups from Dnipro and Kyiv, along with representatives from Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, joined by local Jews from Nezhin. Participants took part in a Lag BaOmer bonfire lighting, a warm Farbrengen of Achdus, and heartfelt prayers for both communal and personal needs.
In addition, continuing another longstanding tradition, a central Lag BaOmer bonfire was held in Haditch near the Ohel of the Alter Rebbe, founder of Chabad Chassidus and author of the Tanya and Shulchan Aruch. Yidden living within several hours of the region gathered to mark the day of Rashbi’s celebration.
Rabbi Shneur Zalman Deitsch, shliach responsible for the holy sites on behalf of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine, said: “Haditch and Nezhin are our ‘Meron.’ Therefore, it was obvious that, as every year and in keeping with tradition, Jews across Ukraine would travel for hours to pray at these holy resting places on such an auspicious day.”
