Speaking in the presence of the press, President Putin highlighted the significance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, emphasizing the suffering of over one million Soviet and Russian Jews during World War II, and the liberation of Leningrad. He praised the ongoing efforts of Jewish communities in Russia and their role in promoting peace and mutual respect among different faiths.
Rabbi Lazar responded by stressing the importance of dialogue and shared values, noting that Russia today provides a safe environment for Jews to practice their faith openly. He recounted the role of Chabad Chassidim in strengthening Jewish life, recalling how decades ago, antisemitic incidents, including synagogue burnings, made religious life challenging. Today, he said, the younger generation is reconnecting with timeless Jewish values.
The two leaders also reflected on the historical influence of devout Jewish families in shaping the values of future generations, with Putin recalling his childhood neighbor, a Chabad family in Leningrad, whose dedication to Torah observance left a lasting impression. Rabbi Lazar noted that Jewish communities continue to follow this model, teaching and preserving their heritage with devotion.
Rabbi Alexander Barda, President of the Russian Federation of Jewish Communities, added that patriotism and love of country, promoted by all religions, form the foundation of national unity in Russia, highlighting the role of traditional religious values in civic life.
The meeting concluded with both leaders affirming their commitment to continued cooperation and support for Russia’s diverse religious communities.
