Rabbi Berel Lazar, Chief Rabbi of Russia, and Rabbi Yitzchak Kogan, one of the senior Chabad Rabbonim in Russia, participated Wednesday evening in the establishment ceremony of the new community of Geva Shomron, near Sa-Nur in northern Shomron. The event also included a Hachnasas Sefer Torah for the new community.

Rabbi Lazar praised the families who had arrived to establish the community, saying: “The real heroes are the families coming here today to establish this community. You are the true heroes of the Jewish people.” In his remarks, he also emphasized the importance of unity and Ahavas Yisroel.

Rabbi Kogan blessed those gathered with Birchas Kohanim, saying: “Mazel Tov to everyone. We are privileged to feel that we are part of this undertaking. May you be blessed, and we are proud of you.”

Geva Shomron is being established in northern Shomron, in an area from which four Jewish communities – Sa-Nur, Chomesh, Ganim and Kadim – were uprooted during the 2005 disgraced withdrawal from northern Shomron and the Gaza Strip, when Israel also evacuated its permanent military installations from the region.

Geva Shomron is being established as part of the renewed Jewish settlement in the region. The first families arrived at the site on Wednesday, with the official establishment ceremony held later that day.

Following the ceremony, Rabbi Kogan visited the Chabad Yeshivah in Mitzpe Yitzhar, where he toured the premises together with the Rosh Yeshivah, Rabbi Itzik Sandroy.

Later, a Siyum and Hachnasas Sefer Torah ceremony took place in the community of Noa, with the participation of talmidim of the Chabad Yeshivah in Mitzpe Yitzhar and members of the local community.
