A group of supporters of Russian Jewry, together with Russia’s Chief Rabbi and the Rebbe’s Shliach, Rabbi Berel Lazar, met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem for a Hascholas Ksivas Sefer Torah in merit of Russian-speaking Jews around the world • Read More, Photos

President Herzog participated in the ceremony by writing a letter in the Sefer Torah, which is intended to unite Russian-speaking Jewish communities across the globe. Following the ceremony in Jerusalem, the Sefer Torah is expected to travel to Jewish communities in Australia, the United States and other countries, giving Jews around the world an opportunity to take part in its writing.

During the gathering, President Herzog praised Rabbi Lazar and Chabad for their work strengthening Jewish life and expressed his appreciation to those dedicated to supporting Russian Jewry.

Herzog also shared a personal connection to Russia and Chabad, noting that his wife Michal’s family immigrated from Russia in 1920. He recalled receiving the Rebbe’s Bracha on two occasions when he was younger and shared a family tradition connecting one of his wife’s ancestors with saving the Tzemach Tzedek.

Rabbi Lazar spoke about the importance of Jewish unity and mutual responsibility, emphasizing that despite differences among Jews, the Jewish people share a common heritage and destiny.

The initiative seeks to bring Russian-speaking Jews together through one Sefer Torah, strengthening their connection to Torah and to one another across communities and continents.
