Somewhere around the fifth one, a thought forms. Stop telling me I can become rich. I know what is in the account. I have seen the tuition bill. I am not looking for a segulah, I am looking for the end of the month.
So we won’t tell you that you will become rich. Instead, we will tell you what the Rebbe said on Shabbos Parshas Nitzavim-Vayeilech 5743.
The Rebbe says that from Shabbos Mevarchim Tishrei, a person should pledge tzedakah measured against what he expects to earn over the coming year, through the following Elul.
Not a pledge based on what is in your account tonight, but based on the brachos you want to receive.
How much should I pledge?
The Rebbe relates the story of a young man who came to the Frierdiker Rebbe when the Tzemach Tzedek’s sefarim were being printed, and pledged the full cost of the printing. By any honest accounting of his situation, he did not have the money and had no visible way to get it.
He wrote his pledge anyway.
What followed is that channels of parnassah opened that had not been there before. He paid what he had promised, and there was more left over for himself.
