New York City is increasing the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables that residents receiving food assistance can purchase through its Health Bucks program, raising the daily benefit limit by 40% beginning in January 2027.
Under the expansion, SNAP recipients will be eligible to receive up to $14 per day in Health Bucks, up from the current $10 limit. The program provides a $2 coupon for every $2 spent on eligible fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets and farm stands.
The coupons can be used at more than 100 participating markets and farm stands throughout the city, giving eligible families additional purchasing power while supporting local farmers and vendors.
City officials expect to distribute nearly $2.3 million in Health Bucks to SNAP recipients during 2027 as a result of the expansion.
The program is funded through city resources and $5.7 million in new federal grant funding through the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program, which supports efforts to increase fruit and vegetable purchases among SNAP recipients.
The announcement was made by Mayor Zohran Mamdani as part of the city’s efforts to address food insecurity and make nutritious groceries more affordable. Mamdani said the expanded benefit would help families access fresh produce while supporting neighborhood farmers markets.
The expansion comes as the Health Bucks program marks its 20th anniversary. Since its launch in 2005, the New York City Health Department has distributed more than $20 million in Health Bucks.
