Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put on tefillin this morning and shared the footage with tens of thousands, appearing wrapped in a tallis and using the tefillin of Golani soldier Staff Sergeant Sean Carmeli, may G-d avenge his blood, who fell during Operation Protective Edge.
The holy tefillin were brought to the Prime Minister by Rabbi Or Ziv, the Rebbe’s shliach in Katamon HaMoshava, Jerusalem.
Netanyahu wrote that on Yom Hazikaron for Israel’s fallen soldiers, he continues his annual practice of putting on tefillin in memory of Israel’s heroes who gave their lives for the nation’s revival and freedom.
He described the emotional experience of using the tefillin of Sean Carmeli, a lone soldier who came from the United States to serve in the IDF and was killed in Gaza, noting the deep connection between generations, tradition, and sacrifice.
He added that each year the experience is different, with a different soldier and a different story, yet all reflecting one shared legacy of devotion and heroism.
Rabbi Or Ziv told ChabadInfo that this has become an annual tradition, with the Prime Minister putting on tefillin in memory of fallen soldiers. This year, he brought the tefillin of Sean Carmeli, a hero from Golani Battalion 13.
He noted that what could have been a five-minute mitzvah took nearly 40 minutes, filled with emotion, prayer, and a deep sense of faith in the people of Israel, the Land of Israel, and the Torah of Israel.
