The town of Bel Air, Maryland, has honored the new Chabad House of Chabad-Lubavitch of Harford County with its top architectural award – the first time in the award’s 28-year history that a religious institution is believed to have received the recognition.
Rabbi Kushi Schusterman, who directs the Chabad House with his wife Fraida, accepted the 28th annual Archer-Bull Award from the town’s Economic and Community Development Commission. With characteristic humor, he opened by confessing he had contributed almost no material labor to the building – his main job, he said, was saying “It’s beautiful!” and “How much?”, sometimes in the same breath.
The $3 million center at 38 E. Broadway, in the seat of Harford County in northeastern Maryland, opened in June 2025, the culmination of a dream some 16 years in the making.
The award, named for 19th-century Bel Air architect George Archer and master builder Jacob Bull, recognizes a local project that has undergone exterior work in the past five years.
