A Lubavitcher Bochur, who recently visited a recruitment office to regularize his military status and request a service deferment and permission to Beis Chayeinu, was arrested on the spot.
The Bochur was sentenced to about three weeks in prison, even though he didn’t try to avoid the draft or escape the country.
The arrest and sentence sparked outrage among the Bochurim in Chabad Yeshivos across the country. They see this as an excessive and unjustified punishment, since the Bochur did not try to escape, but came to settle his situation legally.
Last week, Chabadinfo reported that a Lubavitcher Bochur returning from Kvutza was arrested at Ben-Gurion Airport. According to sources familiar with the matter, he is believed to be the first student from the 5785 Kvutza group to be detained upon arrival.
Agudas Yisroel MK Meir Porush lambasted the arrests, calling them an “International shame.”
In the coming weeks, hundreds more students are expected to return from their year of Kvutza in New York, as they prepare to begin their year of Shlichus in Tomchei Tmimim Yeshivos across Eretz Yisroel — many of whom may face arrest following the IDF’s cancellation of its long-standing arrangement with Chabad Yeshivos.
