Chabad Bochur Arrested at Ben Gurion, Sentenced to 20 Days in Military Prison

A young Chabad student was arrested at Ben Gurion Airport on his way to spend Tishrei with The Rebbe and was sentenced to 20 days in military jail. The move is being condemned as a political attack, rather than a solution worked out with the yeshiva system • Full Report

A Chabad Yeshiva student was arrested this week at Ben Gurion Airport while preparing to board a flight bound for New York, where he planned to spend Tishrei with The Rebbe. The Bochur, who learns in one of the Chabad Yeshivos in Eretz Yisroel, was tried and sentenced to 20 days in a military prison.

The arrest comes amid heightened military enforcement at airports and border crossings against individuals classified as arikim. Military Police units have been stationed at Ben Gurion daily for over a year, and in recent days additional troops have been deployed around Haifa Airport, seaports, and land crossings on Israel’s borders with Jordan and Egypt.

The case sparked an outcry in the Frum community and beyond. Deputy Minister of Education MK Meir Porush blasted the government’s actions, calling them “an international disgrace.”

“An iron curtain has been imposed by the State of Israel against Chassidim seeking to travel to their Rebbe,” Porush said. “At the directive of the Attorney General, a precedent-setting campaign has begun to prevent Jews from celebrating Rosh Hashanah as they have for generations. It is unbelievable that in a country governed by Jews, such a thing could happen.”

The incident is being viewed within the community as nothing less than a declaration of war against Chabad in Israel. Instead of working together with the Yeshivos and enabling students to travel to The Rebbe for Tishrei as in years past, the government is seen as playing politics at the expense of the Bochurim and their spiritual needs.
