“I’m proud to have irritated you.” With these words, a bus driver from Beitar Illit, Reb Moshe David Cohen, responded to a contentious statement by an MK from the Blue and White party claiming that Israel’s economic woes are due to the “growth in birthrate.”

The MK, Alon Tal, sought to make a connection between the rising cost of living, cost of dwellings and other economic issues and the rising birthrate. The MK even called to reduce the “accelerating birthrate.”

Tal spoke at a Knesset hearing Monday in the wake of rising taxes and food costs. Producing data from Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics which stated that the population had grown by 160,000 this year, Tal blamed previous governments for the “rising birthrate” and claimed that Israel can weaken burgeoning demand by lowering birthrates.

Cohen, a father of 15 children and from a large family himself, responded in a Facebook page which quickly went viral: “Thank G-d I am alive and breathing, working 12 hours a day on public transport, as well as on Fridays and Motzaei Shabbos.

‘Even if you and your friends don’t count me and my family and steal income tax from me without taking into account the number of children I have, I don’t think for a minute that you will tend to my livelihood. I manage with the help of the One who feeds and provides for all of his creation, and I also try to help whoever I can.

“You have given me the desire to ask Hashem to bless me with more children and just as he has partnered with me and my wife 15 times, may he partner with me more and more times in these real assets.”

Cohen is a popular bus driver in Beitar Illit who greets his passengers individually and is happy to give them Tefillin to wear as evident in the following clip:

Tal is a professor of public policy who established Adam Teva V’Din, an environment action association, as well as “Crowded – the Forum for Population, Environment and Society” studying the effect of population growth on society.
