In a symbolic gesture of support for Israeli citizens held hostage by Hamas in Gaza, Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine, Michael Brodsky, planted the “Garden of Hope” in Kyiv. The event, coinciding with Tu BiShvat and taking place shortly before International Holocaust Remembrance Day, unfolded near the Beit Menachem JCC and Synagogue, with representatives from the U.S., Sweden, and Spain embassies in attendance. The initiative was led by Rabbi Yonatan Markovich, the Chief Rabbi of Kyiv.

The “Garden of Hope” project signifies solidarity between the nations, aiming to raise awareness about Israeli military and civilian captives held by Hamas. The initiative demands the return of the hostages to their families.

Honorary Consul of Israel in Ukraine, Oleg Vishnyakov, Ukrainian Members of Parliament, including Alexander Kunitsyn, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Ukraine-Israel Relations, Jonathan Ben-Dor, Chairman of KKL-JNF Ukraine, and representatives from the Ukrainian Armed Forces command also participated in the event.

During the event, participants recited psalm chapters in honor of the hostages and in memory of the fallen soldiers.

Rabbi Yonatan Markovich emphasized that “our hearts here in Kyiv are turned to the citizens of Israel, especially to the families of the abducted.” According to Rabbi Markovich, the “Garden of Hope” symbolizes the profound connection between diaspora Jews and those in Israel, reflecting the shared aspiration for a life of freedom and growth in unity that triumphs over the forces of darkness.
