As every year, at Maidan Nezalezhnosti, in the heart of Kyiv and with the participation of the local leaders and a number of ambassadors, Europe’s tallest Menorah in Europe was lit.
On the fifth night of Chanukah, Michael Brodsky, the Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine, was honored to light the Menorah.
The event was attended by the Mayor Vitaly Klitschko and many ambassadors (among them from USA, Canada, Italy, Austria, France, Argentina, Great Britain, Slovenia and Sweden), as well as Shluchim and Rabbonim, including Rabbi Meir Stambler, the chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine and his deputy Rabbi Raphael Rothman, who organized the event.
Rabbi Stambler, mentioned in his speech the Sicha of the Rebbe, “That the fifth candle of Chanukah is always lit on weekdays and never on Shabbos, therefore this night has an even greater role to illuminate the darkness.”
“We are in a dark time, in great darkness, in a war of light against darkness both here [in Ukraine] and in Eretz Yisroel, but we must not give up. ‘With the help of the Maccabees, we too will be able to banish this great darkness and gain the light of Geulah'” he said.
The federation boasts that it is a 12-meter high menorah – making it the tallest in Europe. Its placement required a special security permit from the Ukrainian army.
Among other things, with the help of the Federation, the Rebbe’s Shluchim throughout Ukraine held large public Menorah lightings.
