Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has instructed the defense establishment and the IDF to immediately formulate a new framework regulating the status of Chabad yeshiva students, following the collapse of the long-standing “Chabad Arrangement.”
According to a report by journalist Mendy Rizel, Katz’s directive came after it became clear that the cancellation of the arrangement in August 2025 resulted in the IDF losing hundreds of potential recruits – many of them highly motivated and instrumental in helping the military meet its ‘Charedi’ enlistment goals.
The minister’s intervention follows the breakdown of official negotiations between senior IDF officials and Chabad representatives.
Since 2016, the unique arrangement allowed Chabad yeshiva students to travel to 770 in New York for their “Kvutza” year while committing to enlist in the IDF at the age of 26.
The framework expired after the Israeli Supreme Court struck down the previous draft law, and efforts to establish a replacement have so far been unsuccessful.
