Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has decided to delay approval of new municipal inspector positions for the Haifa Municipality following repeated allegations that city inspectors have targeted Chabad tefillin stands throughout the city.
In recent weeks, several incidents have been reported in which, according to Chabad activists, municipal inspectors ordered tefillin stands to be removed and took enforcement measures against public tefillin campaigns, drawing widespread criticism.
Commenting on the controversy, Ben-Gvir said, “It is unacceptable for municipal inspectors to harass Jews who are helping others put on tefillin in the public square. Those who undermine religious freedom and Jewish tradition will not receive our backing.”
As part of his ministry’s authority, it was announced that approval of the new municipal inspector positions for Haifa will be suspended pending a review of the municipality’s conduct and assurances that religious freedom and the rights of Chabad Chassidim operating tefillin stands will be respected.
Rabbi Yehuda Ginzburg, the Rebbe’s Shliach to Haifa, responded by emphasizing a different approach. “The Rebbe always taught us to focus on doing good,” he said. “We did not turn to the media or politicians, and that is not our role. On the contrary, we support increasing public safety for the city’s residents. We will continue to expand our activities, and, with Hashem’s help, the Haifa Municipality will assist and stand alongside the blessed work of the Chabad Shluchim in Haifa.”
