At Ages 73 and 74: Moving Double Bar Mitzvah in Namibia, Africa
A deeply moving double bar mitzvah was recently celebrated in Namibia for two Jewish men aged 73 and 74, who were never able to mark their bar mitzvahs in their youth. The event was organized as part of the ongoing activities of the local Chabad House, led by shliach Rabbi Yosef Rechimi, with shluchim and supporters mobilizing to make the occasion possible, including providing both ‘Bar Mitzva boys’ with high-quality Chabad Tefillin • Full Story, Photos
In the weeks leading up to the celebration, the two bar mitzvah men attended daily classes and hands-on instruction in laying tefillin. The preparation culminated in the long-awaited moment when they were called to the Torah and celebrated their bar mitzvahs with great joy and emotion.
One of the bar mitzvah men summed up the experience simply and powerfully: “I realized that it’s never too late to be a Jew.”
Rabbi Yosef Rechimi, the Rebbe’s shliach in Namibia, told ChabadInfo: “The Rebbe teaches us that it is always possible to complete and celebrate a bar mitzvah, even at an advanced age. For them, this was a deep and meaningful process that truly changed their lives.”
