Yesterday morning, 80 students of the Chabad Talmud Torah in Afula were taken by surprise when police and municipal inspectors entered the school grounds, investigating why the institution was reportedly operating “without proper authorization.” The school was originally established by the Municipality of Afula several years ago and currently serves 80 students.
Concerned parents conducted their own inquiry, which revealed that the school had completed all necessary approvals with the Ministry of Education and the Municipality of Afula. Like many growing educational institutions, the school had earned a solid reputation over the years and now operates grades 1 through 5, serving 80 boys. Over the past year, despite repeated attempts to submit applications for an official school emblem and formal recognition — which require municipal Education Department involvement and allocation of space — approvals have not been granted, leaving the school at risk of closure.
Parents further noted that inquiries with the Ministry of Education confirm that the school meets all legal requirements for the official emblem. However, the Municipality has yet to submit the required application, despite public events and opening ceremonies where the city and Mayor had pledged to support the school fully, ensuring both the educational rights of Afula’s children and the preservation of the traditional Chabad educational standards in accordance with the Oholei Yosef Yitzchak network.
