This week, in the islands of Zanzibar, Tanzania, a deeply moving and powerful event took place: the inauguration of a Sefer Torah at the local Chabad House—marking the first time a Sefer Torah was brought into a Chabad center on the Muslim island.
It was a moment in which the ohr of Torah crossed borders and seas, drawing Divine light even to the heart of Africa.
Participating in the event were Jewish travelers from around the world, members of the local Jewish community, Rabbi Yaron Neeman, and the Rebbe’s shliach to Arusha. Tanzania, Rabbi Moshiach Kupchik.
The Sefer Torah was generously and lovingly donated by devoted friends of the Chabad House, Eliyahu and Shira Ben-Ari. It now resides in a place that serves as a warm home, a source of ohr, and a spiritual anchor for many Jews who reside or pass through Zanzibar.
This historic occasion joins a growing list of landmark moments in the Rebbe’s shlichus in Zanzibar—a shlichus that brings the Ohr HaChassidus and spreads the message of the Geulah, even to the most distant corners of the world.
As we await the fulfillment of the prophecy: “umalah ha’aretz de’ah es Hashem – and the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea.”
