An emotional moment took place at the Jewish University in Moscow when Volodya, a first-year student from the city of Miass, entered the Bris of Avraham Avinu after discovering that he descends from a family of Chabad Chassidim from Rechitsa, in the Minsk Governorate of the Russian Empire.
On his way to the Bris, the university’s Rabbi, Rabbi Dovber Goldberg, suggested that he ask his mother what his grandfather’s Jewish name had been.
To his great emotion, he discovered that his grandfather, Ivan, had been given the Chassidic name Menachem Mendel Gurevitch and was born in Rechitsa, a town with a rich Chassidic heritage.
The young man, who had already chosen the name Aryeh for himself, was moved to take his grandfather’s name and will now be known as Menachem Mendel.
The Bris was performed by Mohel Dr. Rabbi Yeshaya Shapit, with Rabbi Ephraim Binyaminov, a friend of the university, serving as Sandek.
Following the Bris, a Seudas Mitzvah was held with the participation of his fellow students.
