When the Lebanon War broke out in the summer of 1982, the Rebbe directed Rabbi Leibel Kaplan, A”H, Shliach in Tzfas, to publish Tanya inside the enemy’s territory, a total of 15 editions of Tanya were printed in various Lebanese cities, including the capital city of Beirut.

During the Yud Beis-Yud Gimmel Farbrengen of that year, the Rebbe MH”M spoke about printing Tanya during the War in a Sicha: “After all, the audience likes a ‘Shturem’ – after all, there is a simple proof that they are already inside the city of Beirut. On this table is a Tanya book that was printed in Beirut a few days ago, so there was time to bring the Tanya here, in such a way that it would be on the table during the Farbrengen of Yud Beis-Yud Gimmel Tammuz!”

Fast forward to today, from the onset of the ongoing Gaza war, IDF Maj. Ezzy Morgenstern (a Rabbi, IDF chaplain and combat engineer), with the help of Rabbi Menachem Offen (the official liaison Tzach of Eretz Yisroel to the IDF), spoke to top generals in the Golani battalion who gave the OK to print the Tanya in Gaza five times, but every time something prevented it from happening.

On Wednesday morning, Ezzy received a text that he would be able to print the Tanya that day in Khan Yunis, Gaza. On his way, he stopped by kibbutz Ein Hashalosha to pick up a printer and then sped to the Gaza border. There, he joined an armed convoy and headed into the heart of the war zone in Gaza, where he printed 100 copies of the Tanya, with the help of the IDF soldiers.

Rabbi Offen joined later in the afternoon, he put on Teffilin with the soldiers and put up mezuzahs in operations rooms at the entrance to the compound., while the Tanya was printing, sang Niggunim and then learned chapter 32 of Tanya with the soldiers from the newly printed Tanya.

“Officers kept asking me how long it would take, and I told them an hour and half tops, but with paper jams, cartridge changes and frequent blackouts that caused the printer and software to reset, the printing took more than five hours,” Ezzy said.

“With Hashem’s help, we’re going to be printing Tanyas in many more interesting places,” he added.
