Crown Heights Underwater: Torrential Rain Floods Streets, Homes—and 770
A sudden storm swept through Brooklyn on Thursday, bringing heavy rainfall that caused flash floods across Crown Heights. Streets turned into rivers and basements filled with water, leaving numerous homes and community buildings dealing with serious flooding • Full Story, Watch
One of the hardest-hit locations was 770 Eastern Parkway. A blockage in the drainage system, combined with the torrential downpour, caused water to rush into the main Zal and surrounding rooms. Footage from the scene shows large pools of water across the floor and Bochurim working to prevent further damage.
Cleaning crews worked quickly and were able to bring the situation under control after some time.
The Gabbaim of 770 issued a warning to anyone who uses lockers in the lower level, urging them to remove their Tefillin, Seforim, and other personal items to prevent water damage. “Some lockers have already been affected,” they wrote, “and we advise everyone to act immediately.”
In a dramatic effort to save the tefillin stored in the flooded area, volunteers and staff went around snipping the locks off the lower-level lockers to retrieve the contents before they were ruined. Their swift action is credited with saving dozens of pairs of tefillin and other valuables from water damage.
Elsewhere in the neighborhood, residents reported flooded basements, damaged property, and inaccessible roads. New York City’s emergency services responded to dozens of calls throughout the evening.
As cleanup begins, Crown Heights residents are assessing the damage and working to dry out and repair their homes and institutions.
