The Crown Heights community is saddened by the passing of Mrs. Mindy Halberstam (née Wolghemut), who merited to share a close and unique connection with Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson ע”ה. Mrs. Halberstam passed away on Thursday, Erev Shavuos, at the age of 77.
Born in Milan, Italy, Mrs. Halberstam grew close to Lubavitch through the efforts of the shluchim Rabbi Gershon Mendel Garelik and Mrs. Bassie Garelik.
In 1970, she married Rabbi Chaim Baruch Halberstam, a descendant of the Sanz dynasty and founder of WLCC, known for documenting daily life with the Rebbe. Prior to their wedding, the couple merited to have yechidus with the Rebbe.
Mrs. Halberstam cherished many special memories of the Rebbetzin, including receiving personal gifts and brachos for her wedding. Over the years, she and her family developed a warm relationship with the Rebbetzin, frequently visiting her home on President Street, where the Rebbetzin would lovingly spend time with their young children.
In interviews over the years, Mrs. Halberstam spoke emotionally about the privilege of those encounters, describing the Rebbetzin’s warmth, simplicity, and visible joy.
Mrs. Halberstam was known as a sincere Chasidishe woman, devoted to the Rebbe’s Inyonim and active in Mivtzoim for many years. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of hiskashrus, ahavas Yisroel, and dedication to Yiddishkeit.
She is survived by her husband, Rabbi Chaim Baruch, their children Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Halberstam – Yerushalayim, Rabbi Sholom Ber Halberstam – Chicago, Mrs. Dini Gurary – Montreal, Mrs. Chanie Kramer – Merrick, NY; Mrs. Rivky Shifrin – Little Neck, Queens; Mrs. Chaya Evers – Amsterdam, Mrs. Divi Greisman – Florida and Mrs. Sara Paris; grandchildren.
The levaya will take place tomorrow, Sunday, passing by 770 at 2:00 pm, burial at Old Montefiore Cemetery at 3:30 pm.
