With great sadness we inform you of the passing of R’ Bentzion Friedman, OB”M, of Crown Heights, at 84 years of age. He was a beloved teacher to his students in Oholei Torah, and devoted to the Rebbe’s activities, working for Tzach.
R’ Bentzion was born in Krenitz, Poland to Rabbi Meir Yisroel Isser Hakohen Friedman the town Rav, and his wife Feiga. He was the youngest of three brothers.
After the second world war, they fled Poland, finding refuge in the Russian worker’s camps in Siberia. When the Soviets offered special refugee status to Polish migrants in 1941, the family made their way to Tashkent, Bukhara, where they were received by the local Chabad community. There R’ Bentzion studied under the famed R’ Yisroel Nevler.
In 1949, he moved to the United States together with his father and sister, Sara Hurwitz. His brother, Yaakov Moshe, stayed in Prague, where he undertook heroic efforts in assisting the thousands who were fleeing the European inferno.
As soon as he arrived in the states, Bentzion began studying in Tomchei Temimimin 770, where he excelled. Soon, he married his wife Chana, the daughter of Rabbi Dovid Mintzberg, a Mashpia in the famed Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin.
Shortly after their wedding, they moved out on Shlichus to Springfield, MA where he also was a teacher in the Lubavitch Cheder there. A number of years later the family returned to Crown Heights, where he accepted a teaching position in Oholei Torah, and various other Talmud Torahs.
He is survived by his children: Faige Rubashkin (Crown Heights), Dovid Friedman (Pittsburgh, PA) Suri Ciment (Crown Heights) Shaina New (Melbourne, Australia) and Yossi Friedman (Crown Heights).
