Homel: A New Link in the Chain of Shlichus to the Historic Chassidic City

The pages of Eastern European Jewish history are woven with golden threads of self-sacrifice and Torah, but it seems that the city of “Homel” (Gomel) in Belarus holds a special place of honor in the Chassidic pantheon.

The city, which was once a magnet for thousands of Chassidim and boasted the rabbinate of the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Epstein, known as R’ Isaac Homiler, appointed by The Alter Rebbe, author of the Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, of blessed memory—has experienced many upheavals. From its golden era, when a clandestine Tomchei Temimim yeshiva operated there, to years of spiritual desolation. Now, the historical gap is being closed, and the second-largest city in Belarus stands on the threshold of an exciting new era.

This special atmosphere was deeply felt at a warm, Chassidishe “Tzeischem Leshalom” farbrengen held this week in Moscow, led by the Rosh Kollel, R’ Yosef Yitzchak Marzel. The members of the Kollel gathered to bless and bid farewell to their fellow student, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Kot, who is setting out with his family on Shlichus to the city of Homel.

For the young Rabbi Kot, a life of Shlichus is not a new concept; he absorbed it from the home of his father, the Rabbi of Estonia and Shliach, R’ Shmuel Kot, who brought about a true revolution in his country, and from the home of his father-in-law, the Shliach in Kfar Daniel, R’ Moshe Marinovsky. Now, the glorious family chain extends further, reaching another destination in the Russian-speaking world.

The Chief Rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar Shlit”a, who oversees the development of communities throughout the entire region, addressed this blessed departure and praised the city’s glorious Chassidic past. In his remarks, Rabbi Lazar emphasized that Homel already hosts extensive and impressive Jewish activities today, dedicatedly guided by the local community president, Mr. Yosef Zholdov, a man of many accomplishments who serves as the pillar of the community. He welcomed the new Rabbi’s family to the city and community, noting that their arrival is meant to add vitality, expand the circles of influence, and infuse rich Chassidic content into the existing frameworks.

With the packing of suitcases and the final preparations for the journey, the gaze of the Shluchim family and all partners in this endeavor is directed forward with a momentum of action, especially on the threshold of the High Holidays and the month of Tishrei, which are full of activities for all members of the Jewish community.

Homel, whose streets are steeped in the Chassidic melodies and stories of past generations, is ready to absorb this new light. The activities, which will be doubled and expanded in close collaboration with the local community leadership, promise to transform the city once again into a beacon of Torah and Yiddishkeit, whose rays will illuminate all the districts of southeastern Belarus for many bright years to come, alongside the other major cities in Belarus where dedicated Rabbis and Shluchim serve the entire Jewish population of Belarus.
