    New Shluchim to West Philadelphia

Rabbi Mendel and Mushka Dubrowski and family are setting out on the Rebbe’s Shlichus to establish a new Chabad House in West Philadelphia, serving the area’s growing Jewish population and building a new center of Jewish life in the historic community • Read More

West Philadelphia was once home to a large and vibrant Jewish community, with Jewish life flourishing in the area throughout the first half of the 20th century. As families gradually moved to the suburbs, much of that infrastructure disappeared. In recent years, however, Jewish life has been experiencing a resurgence, with young professionals and families returning to the area. Today, upwards of 4,000 Jews are estimated to live throughout West Philadelphia.

The Dubrowskis are now preparing to establish a Chabad presence dedicated to reaching every Jew in the area, regardless of background or level of Jewish knowledge.

The new Chabad House will offer Torah classes, opportunities to fulfill Mitzvos, Yom Tov programs, community Shabbos dinners and programs for children and families. The goal is to create a warm and welcoming Jewish home where community members can connect with their Jewish heritage and strengthen their connection to Yiddishkeit.

The new Shlichus is being launched from the ground up, without existing infrastructure or a local financial base. The Dubrowskis have therefore launched a fundraising campaign to provide the initial resources needed to establish the Chabad House and begin serving the community.

“We want to create a warm and welcoming Jewish community where every Jew—regardless of background or level of Jewish knowledge—feels valued, connected and inspired,” the Dubrowskis said in announcing the Shlichus.

The couple describes their mission as part of the broader goal of Chabad Houses around the world: to bring more light into the world through Torah and mitzvos and ultimately hasten the coming of Moshiach.

The launch of the new Shlichus adds another chapter to the return of Jewish life to West Philadelphia, with the Dubrowskis now preparing to lay the foundation for a new Jewish community that they hope will continue to grow for generations to come.
