Chabad Shluchim in Sri Lanka, Rabbi Mendy Krombi and Rabbi Roni Ard, met with Sri Lanka’s newly appointed ambassador to Israel for a discussion held against the backdrop of recent developments and incidents affecting Chabad activities on the island. During the meeting, the ambassador addressed the safety and well-being of the Shluchim serving in Sri Lanka, stressing that the Sri Lankan authorities are committed to ensuring their security.
During the meeting, the ambassador expressed his appreciation for the extensive work of Chabad Houses throughout Sri Lanka, which for years have served thousands of Jewish travelers and tourists visiting the country, providing religious services, kosher food, Davening and assistance in a wide range of areas.
The ambassador emphasized the importance the Sri Lankan government places on the activities of the Chabad Houses and their contribution to tourism and relations between the two countries. He also expressed his willingness to personally assist with any issues that may arise, with the goal of allowing Chabad’s activities to continue safely and freely.
The meeting took place following recent incidents affecting Chabad activities in Sri Lanka, amid opposition from elements within the Muslim minority and increased reports of antisemitic incidents and attempts to pressure Jewish activities in the country.
The ambassador also addressed the safety and well-being of the Rebbe’s Shluchim, volunteers and Jewish businesspeople operating in Sri Lanka. He made clear that the Sri Lankan authorities are committed to protecting their safety and security and will not allow harm to come to them or interfere with their lawful activities.
The ambassador expressed his desire to work together with the Shluchim and relevant officials in Israel and Sri Lanka to address the difficulties that have emerged in recent weeks and ensure that Chabad Houses can continue their extensive work serving Jews arriving in Sri Lanka from around the world.
The Shluchim thanked the ambassador for his concern, willingness to assist and the commitment expressed by him and the Sri Lankan government to the safety and security of the Shluchim and Jewish visitors. They expressed hope that the meeting will lead to a swift resolution of the difficulties and allow Chabad activities throughout the island to continue without disruption.
