The flooding intensified when the Kelani River, flowing from Colombo toward the Indian Ocean, burst its banks late Friday. Entire neighborhoods were inundated, forcing authorities to issue evacuation orders for city centers and surrounding villages. Hundreds of families were displaced overnight and moved to temporary shelters as water levels continued to rise.
In the midst of the chaos, an Israeli man in his 30s was reported missing, prompting concern after contact with him was lost. Hours of uncertainty followed as rescue efforts continued and communication across affected regions remained unstable.
With assistance from local contacts, he was successfully located. Within the past day, he arrived safely at Chabad of Weligama, directed by the Rebbe’s shliach Rabbi Yossi Gromach, where he received support and help.
