Newark Liberty International Airport is receiving a new surface radar system designed to give air traffic controllers a clearer, real-time picture of aircraft and vehicles moving across the airport’s runways and taxiways, helping prevent runway incursions and other dangerous incidents. The system was unveiled Tuesday by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford
The new surface movement radar will allow controllers to better monitor activity on the ground, including in situations where visibility is limited. By providing more precise information on the location and movement of aircraft and vehicles, the technology is intended to give controllers greater situational awareness and an additional tool for identifying potential runway conflicts.
Newark is the fifth U.S. airport to receive the upgraded radar technology. The installation is part of a much broader effort by the Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration to modernize the nation’s aging air traffic control infrastructure.
The modernization plan includes replacing outdated communications equipment, converting hundreds of analog radio systems to modern digital technology and upgrading air traffic control towers and other facilities. The FAA has said the broader program will include 53 surface radar systems at 44 major airports.
Similar upgrades are planned for New York’s LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports, with the nationwide modernization effort targeted for completion by 2028.
The push comes as federal officials seek to strengthen aviation safety and replace decades-old technology. Newark in particular has faced significant air-traffic challenges in recent years, including radar and communications outages that temporarily disrupted operations and raised concerns about the reliability of aging systems.
Duffy and Bedford have described the modernization effort as a major investment in the future of the nation’s air traffic system, with the FAA expecting air travel demand to continue growing substantially in the coming decades.
