Numerous Chabad Houses across the United States have recently received identical emails from a woman claiming to be the widow of a wealthy millionaire, offering to donate a luxury Yamaha grand piano in memory of her late husband. In the message, she explained that she was looking for an institution that would appreciate the instrument and give it a “good home.”
However, after Shluchim expressed interest, they were directed to what appeared to be a shipping company and instructed to pay several hundred dollars upfront for delivery. It was later discovered that the shipping company was fictitious, and once payment was made, the scammers disappeared. The piano never existed.
After Shluchim from several states, including California, Arizona, Minnesota, Georgia, and Massachusetts, compared the emails they had received, it became clear that the messages were part of a coordinated scam targeting dozens of Chabad Houses simultaneously.
Cybersecurity experts warn that this is a well-known fraud scheme and advise organizations not to send advance payments for unsolicited “donations” from unknown individuals, even if the offer appears legitimate.
