The IDF cleared for publication that four armored corps soldiers were killed Thursday night in southern Lebanon after a “suspicious aerial target” struck the battalion commander’s tank in the village of Tebnit, north of Beaufort.
Among the fallen is Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Shimon, HY”D, 32, of Beit Hashita, commander of Battalion 52 in the Iron Tracks Brigade. Also killed was IDF soldier Naveh Havshush, HY”D, of the community of Adam in Binyamin. The names of two additional fallen soldiers have not yet been cleared for publication.
According to the initial investigation, at approximately 12:20 a.m., a suspicious target — either a drone or an anti-tank missile — struck a tank belonging to Battalion 52 forces operating under the Givati Brigade combat team in the area of Tebnit. As a result of the strike, Lt. Col. Ben Shimon, HY”D, and three additional IDF soldiers were killed.
In a separate incident at approximately 4:00 a.m. in the Beaufort area near Tebnit, an explosive drone struck a Commando Brigade force. Five soldiers were wounded, one of them seriously. Following the incidents, the IDF struck numerous Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure sites in Nabatieh and other areas of southern Lebanon.
The IDF later cleared for publication the death of Res. Sgt. Nir Ben Ari, HY”D, 21, of Kerem Maharal, a fighter in the Commando Brigade, who was killed overnight in southern Lebanon by Hezbollah rocket fire and explosive drones while defending Eretz Yisroel.
In addition, the IDF cleared for publication the death of Staff Sgt. Yoav Klein, HY”D, 21, of Herzliya, an armored corps soldier in Battalion 52, who was killed in the battalion commander’s tank incident.
Nir Ben Ari, HY”D, who served in the Maglan commando unit as a company sergeant major, was scheduled to begin his discharge leave at the end of the month. He was born and raised in Kerem Maharal and is survived by three siblings: Guy, Shai, and Shir. In nine days, he would have celebrated his 22nd birthday.
Yoav Klein, HY”D, was killed alongside his commander, Lt. Col. Dor Ben Shimon, HY”D. Two additional soldiers were killed in the incident, and their names have not yet been cleared for publication.
Earlier this week, Master Sgt. (res.) Alexander Pilin, HY”D, 29, of Haifa, a soldier in the headquarters of the 36th Division, was killed in combat in southern Lebanon after an explosive device detonated near the command post of the deputy commander of the division. Seven additional IDF soldiers were wounded in the incident – three moderately and four lightly. Among the moderately wounded was the division’s deputy commander, an officer holding the rank of colonel.
Twenty-three soldiers and a Defense Ministry civilian employee have been killed since the ‘ceasefire’ in Lebanon took effect. Thirty-five soldiers have fallen since the renewal of operations in the north approximately three months ago with the launch of Operation “Shaagat HaAri,” including twenty-two after the ceasefire was declared.
Since the beginning of the war, the names of 960 fallen IDF soldiers have been published, including 473 soldiers killed in combat in Gaza and 82 soldiers killed in combat in southern Lebanon.
