In a major escalation of tensions with Iran, President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States will impose a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.

The announcement follows the collapse of high-level negotiations between the United States and Iran, held in Pakistan and led by Vice President J.D. Vance. After approximately 21 hours of talks, discussions ended without an agreement after Iran refused to accept key U.S. conditions, particularly regarding its nuclear program.

Speaking after the talks, Vice President Vance said the negotiations were conducted in good faith but ultimately failed to produce results. He emphasized that the United States made its red lines clear, including preventing Iran from advancing toward nuclear weapons capability.

President Trump stated that the U.S. Navy will begin efforts to block vessels entering or exiting the Strait and may intercept ships suspected of cooperating with Iranian demands for transit payments. He accused Iran of using the strategic waterway for what he described as “global extortion.”

The Strait of Hormuz has become a key pressure point in Iran’s confrontation with the West, with Tehran increasingly using the vital shipping lane as leverage. Roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through the narrow corridor, giving Iran outsized influence over global energy markets.

In recent weeks, Iranian forces have stepped up their presence, closely monitoring and at times harassing vessels transiting the area. At the same time, reports from maritime security analysts indicate that ships tied to China, a major buyer of Iranian oil and one of Tehran’s closest allies, have not faced disruptions, highlighting what appears to be selective enforcement. The situation has raised alarms that Iran is effectively turning an international waterway into a geopolitical weapon, rewarding allies while pressuring adversaries and testing the limits of Western response.
