As is well known, on Yud-Alef Nissan 5741, The Rebbe launched the campaign to write a Sefer Torah for Jewish Children, emphasizing that the world stood in need of a special Bracha. One month later, on Parshas Bechukosai, the Rebbe explicitly warned that the global situation was deteriorating to the point that a single unstable leader could, Rachmana Litzlan, “press a button and destroy the entire world.”
The Rebbe explained that the response to this situation is strengthening Ahavas Yisroel and Jewish unity, expressed through a Sefer Torah whose letters are dedicated to Jewish children — “Hevel She’ein Bo Chet.” Shortly afterward, on Erev Shavuos, when the Israeli Air Force struck Iraq’s nuclear reactor, many understood the urgency behind the Rebbe’s words.
The Rebbe instructed that every Jewish child should acquire one letter in the Sefer Torah for the symbolic cost of one dollar. At the same time, the Rebbe noted that the actual expenses of operating the campaign are significantly higher, requiring additional public participation both physically and financially to complete the effort.
On numerous occasions, the Rebbe stressed that the writing of general Sifrei Torah is the primary, most essential campaign of our generation. On Tu B’Shvat 5742, the Rebbe described it as “the special campaign of this generation — particularly the final days of Golus — to unite all Jews through writing general Sifrei Torah, by each individual purchasing a letter with their own resources,- ‘Chayei Nafsho.’”
At present, the Vaad is preparing to complete the writing of the Sefer Torah, secure the necessary funding, and produce promotional materials encouraging Anash, Bochurim, N’shei U’Bnos Chabad, and Tzivos Hashem members to intensify registration efforts. Organizers are calling to create a major “Shturem” and to accelerate participation with great enthusiasm and urgency.
The hope and Tefillah remain that the Sefer Torah will be completed very soon, together with the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu, who will write the concluding words, “Le’einei Kol Yisroel.”
