A dramatic milestone has been reached in the writing of the ninth Children’s Sefer Torah, as only 553 letters remain before its completion.
The Sefer Torah will include all 304,805 letters, each acquired on behalf of a Jewish boy or girl from around the world, in accordance with the Rebbe’s historic campaign to unite Jewish children through a shared Sefer Torah.
The completion ceremony is scheduled to take place, IY”H, on 20 Menachem Av, the yahrtzeit of Reb Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, at the Kosel in Yerushalayim.
Organizers report that registration continues at a rapid pace. During the past week alone, 1,756 children from Eretz Yisroel and 565 children from around the world joined the project. The previous week saw an even larger surge, with 3,059 children from Eretz Yisroel and 1,459 from outside the country registering to acquire a letter.
The campaign was launched by the Rebbe on 11 Nissan 5741 (1981), when he called for the writing of a Sefer Torah for Jewish children and emphasized the need for a special source of blessing and protection for the Jewish people. In subsequent sichos, the Rebbe stressed that the unity of Klal Yisroel serves as a powerful safeguard in a world facing increasing uncertainty and danger.
To express that unity, the Rebbe established that each Jewish child should acquire one letter in the Sefer Torah for the symbolic cost of one dollar, ensuring equal participation for every child, regardless of background or financial means.
Over the years, the Rebbe repeatedly described the writing of the general Sifrei Torah as one of the most important and all-encompassing campaigns of our generation, emphasizing its unique role in uniting the Jewish people through a tangible act of Achdus.
The Children’s Sefer Torah Committee, under the leadership of Rabbi Shmuel Greisman, is working intensively to complete the final letters, raise the necessary funds, and prepare for the grand celebration that is expected to draw tens of thousands from across Eretz Yisroel.
With only 553 letters remaining, organizers are expressing hope that the Sefer Torah will soon be completed, together with the end of the galus through the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu, speedily in our days.
