In 5753, Merkos made a bold move to expand 770 Eastern Parkway. In order to fund the expansion, a fundraising campaign was launched asking to donate $770 each in order to raise the sum of $13 million (about $27 million adjusted for inflation).

The marketing material for this campaign recently surfaced and provides insight into the vision and goals of Merkos at that time. The materials emphasized the importance of the shul as a place of study, prayer, and community gathering, and highlighted the many programs and services that were offered to members and the wider community.

One brochure described the proposed expansion as a “beacon of light” that would “shine forth to the entire world,” and noted that the new space would include a state-of-the-art auditorium, classrooms, a library, and a kitchen to serve the growing needs of the Chabad community.

Another piece of marketing material featured a letter from the Rebbe, who stressed the importance 770 as a “place of Torah and mitzvot” and called on members to support the expansion effort. The Rebbe emphasized that the expansion was not just about building a physical structure, but about strengthening and enriching the spiritual lives of those who would use it.
