Uber is cutting about 3,300 jobs, or roughly 10% of its global workforce, in its largest round of layoffs since the COVID-19 pandemic, as the ride-hailing giant restructures to keep pace with the rapidly growing robotaxi industry.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told employees that the cuts are aimed at reducing layers of management and making the company faster and more efficient. Uber plans to reduce its number of managers by about 20%, while consolidating teams and eliminating smaller “micro-teams.”
The move comes as autonomous vehicles become an increasingly serious competitor to traditional ride-hailing. Companies including Waymo and Tesla are expanding their robotaxi efforts, while Uber itself is seeking to remain a major player in the driverless transportation market. The company has committed more than $10 billion toward autonomous-vehicle partnerships and technology.
Uber says the savings from the restructuring will be redirected toward growth, innovation, its ride-hailing and delivery businesses, and the development of its autonomous-vehicle strategy.
The cuts come despite strong recent business results. Uber reported $14.2 billion in revenue in the second quarter of 2026, up 12% from a year earlier, highlighting the major shift underway as the company prepares for a transportation industry increasingly shaped by automation.
