President Street in Crown Heights, Brooklyn was once home to a number of doctors and their families, known as “Doctors Row.” Due to restrictions on Jewish doctors at major hospitals, a group of Jewish charities in Brooklyn established their own hospitals and other helpful organizations in the area.

One of these doctors was Dr. Berman, who lived and saw patients in a beautiful mansion on President Street. However, in the 1960s, real estate in the area was being given away for free, leading many to leave the neighborhood.

In an effort to keep real estate in the hands of the community, Chabad organization Machneh Yisroel and its leader, Rabbi Leibel Alevsky, sought to purchase a building on President Street for use as offices and programs. However, they did not have the necessary funds.

They approached Dr. Berman and with the help of Rabbi Zalmen Blezinsky, they came to a deal to purchase the property.

The building is now still owned by Machneh Yisroel and is used by the Lubavitch Youth Organization.
