Two Iranian nationals were arrested in Britain on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack against Manchester’s Jewish community shortly before Yom Kippur.
Court proceedings revealed that the suspects allegedly carried out surveillance of Jewish targets, including Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation and the Manchester Jewish Museum, and sought components for an explosive device.
According to details presented in court, the two suspects allegedly conducted surveillance of Jewish sites in Manchester and sought to obtain components that could be used to construct an explosive device. Investigators believe they were acting on instructions from an Iranian operative based outside the United Kingdom.
The arrests come one year after the deadly Yom Kippur terror attack at the Heaton Park synagogue in Manchester, in which two Mispalelim were murdered.
Manchester is home to a thriving Chabad community, including Chabad of Manchester, Lubavitch Yeshiva, and additional Chabad institutions, alongside the extensive activities of the Rebbe’s Shluchim throughout the city and surrounding Jewish communities.
Boruch Hashem, the suspects were apprehended in time, and the planned attack was foiled before anyone was harmed. The investigation remains ongoing, and the two suspects remain in custody ahead of their next hearing at the Central Criminal Court in London.
