Taylor Farms has expanded a recall of shredded iceberg lettuce and related salad products distributed across 27 states after health officials linked the products to a multistate outbreak of cyclospora, a parasite that causes severe gastrointestinal illness. The recall comes as more than 1,600 illnesses have been reported nationwide, including over 140 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recalled products contain iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico and were distributed between June 29 and July 16. The affected products include shredded lettuce and salad mixes sold under multiple brand names to retailers, restaurants, and food-service distributors.
The FDA’s investigation traced the outbreak to Taylor Farms de Mexico, which supplied shredded iceberg lettuce to non-kosher Taco Bell restaurants where many of the illnesses were reported. In response, Taylor Farms said it has stopped sourcing lettuce from the implicated growing region, suspended distribution of the affected products, and is cooperating with federal and state health authorities. Taco Bell has also removed the affected lettuce from its supply chain nationwide.
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can cause prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Symptoms typically appear several days after consuming contaminated food and can last for weeks if left untreated.
Health officials are urging consumers to discard any recalled products or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
The recalled products were distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The recall applies to products shipped between June 29 and July 16 with “best by” dates through August 3.
While the FDA has not released a complete list of retailers that received the affected lettuce, the only major retail brand identified so far is Marketside, Walmart’s private-label salad brand, including certain 12-ounce and 24-ounce iceberg salad products. Walmart has removed the recalled items from its stores.
Although Taylor Farms products are sold by retailers including Costco, Target, Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Amazon Fresh, there is currently no evidence that the recalled lettuce was sold under those retailers’ own brands.
Taylor Farms has emphasized that its branded salad kits sold through national retailers are not included in the recall because they do not contain the implicated shredded iceberg lettuce.
The FDA said its investigation remains ongoing and that additional products or retailers could be identified as more information becomes available.
