Shochet Rabbi Eliyahu Ezagui, who over the summer performed the first shechita in the country of Nicaragua, was sent to the city of Elista in Russia’s remote and exotic Republic of Kalmykia to perform a shechita run for a private individual.

A special breed of sheep were brought in specifically for the shechita.

The Kalmyk republic covers an area of 29,400 square miles, with a small population of roughly 300,000 residents. The republic is home to the Kalmyks, a people of Mongol origin who are primarily of Buddhist faith.
