A devastating early morning fire destroyed the Bellevue, Washington home of Rabbi Sholom and Chaya Elishevitz, Shluchim of the Rebbe who have served the local Jewish community for the past 18 years. Miraculously, all 11 people inside escaped with only minor injuries after a dramatic rescue.
The blaze broke out at approximately 5 a.m. on Shabbos, June 27. Rabbi Elishevitz awoke to the smell of smoke, rushed his family to safety, and then re-entered the burning home to rescue seven CTeen summer camp counselors sleeping on the second floor.
Finding the staircase completely engulfed in flames, he alerted the counselors, who were forced to jump from second-story windows just moments before the house became fully consumed by fire.
Investigators believe the fire was caused by an electrical panel malfunction.
Rabbi Elishevitz suffered burns to his hands and smoke inhalation while carrying out the rescue, while the counselors sustained only minor injuries. The family lost their home and all of their belongings.
Despite the devastating loss, the annual CTeen summer camp opened as scheduled. Local Shluchim, volunteers, and members of the Bellevue Jewish community quickly mobilized to provide housing, clothing, meals, and other necessities for the Elishevitz family as efforts begin to help them rebuild.
