More than 20 years ago I swabbed for Gift of Life Marrow Registry and never thought about it again… until 2 years ago when I received a call that I was a match. After some delays, 18 months ago I was able to donate.
This week I finally met my new brother Michael Josephs and it was an overwhelming and incredible moment for both of us. It is hard to describe the feeling of having played a role in giving someone the opportunity to live, to be healthy again, to spend time with his grandchildren, and to, G-d willing, have many more years of life to enjoy.
Michael shared that in the hospital they call the transplant day the person’s new birthday and I was reminded of what the Rebbe said, “Birth is G-d’s way of saying ‘You matter’ and our birthdays are His reminder.” May G-d bless Michael with many happy and healthy years filled with inspiration and meaning.
“Anyone who saves a life is as if they saved an entire world.” (Mishna) You can be a match for someone in need today, tomorrow, or in 20 years from now. If you have not yet had a chance to swab, please do so. There is a person, a family, a world, that needs you. Visit www.giftoflife.org for more information.
