Rostov Jewish Community Launches New Museum Initiative

The Jewish community of Rostov-on-Don, Russia, has launched an initiative to establish a museum space dedicated to preserving more than 200 years of Jewish history in the city and the wider Don region • Read More

Led by Rabbi Chaim and Kaila Danzinger, the project is collecting historical photographs, documents, books, religious artifacts and household items that tell the story of generations of Jewish families. Community members are being encouraged to contribute family heirlooms and personal records to help preserve a heritage that might otherwise be lost.

Jewish settlement in Rostov dates back to the early 19th century, with at least 20 Jewish families recorded in the city by 1811. Over time, the community established schools, charitable institutions and synagogues, including the Main Choral Synagogue in 1868.

The Soldiers’ Synagogue, built in 1872 by Jewish veterans, remains the city’s only functioning synagogue. It already houses a small historical display, and the new initiative aims to expand efforts to document and share the community’s history.

Rostov also holds a special place in the history of Chabad. In 1915, the Rebbe Rashab, Rabbi Sholom DovBer Schneersohn, settled in the city and remained there until his passing in 1920. His resting place continues to draw Jewish visitors from around the world.

The museum project seeks to connect the stories and treasured possessions of local Jewish families with the broader history of Jewish life in the region, preserving this legacy for future generations.
