The Zion Memorial Park Holocaust Monument in Bedford Heights, Ohio has received federal recognition, making it the first Holocaust memorial outside of Washington D.C. to be designated as a National Holocaust Memorial by Congress.

The monument, which was established in 1961 by Holocaust survivors in Ohio, has received this designation amid a disturbing increase in antisemitism in the United States.

The Kol Israel Foundation, founded by Holocaust survivors in Cleveland in 1959, has called the monument the oldest Holocaust memorial in the country.

This federal designation serves to ensure that the Holocaust will not be denied or forgotten, according to Hallie Duchon, the executive director of the Kol Israel Foundation. The designation was included in the federal omnibus bill passed by Congress on December 23.
