The MTA is telling subway riders to prepare to say goodbye to MetroCard machines. By the end of next year, the brightly colored machines, reminiscent of colorful kindergarten toys, will go the way of the subway token.

The MTA says this comes as they begin the process of completely replacing MetroCard’s with the new OMNY system. Which uses contactless cards and can be paid with your credit, debit or reloadable prepaid card, or with your smartphone and smart watch, which means no more swiping.

The first OMNY vending machines will be installed in subway stations during the first half of 2023, if testing of the new devices goes according to plan.

Anyone commuting and in need of purchasing a fare card will have either the MetroCard or OMNY machine available until the MetroCard is “retired”, at a date not yet announced.

The MetroCard was introduced in 1993 to enhance the technology of the transit system and eliminate the burden of carrying and collecting tokens. The MTA discontinued the use of tokens in the subway on May 3, 2003, and on buses on December 31, 2003.
