The Gronis Committee, which advises on senior appointments, unanimously approved Thursday evening the nomination of Major General (Res.) David Zini as the next head of Israel’s Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).

The decision followed a thorough review and will be presented for government approval at the upcoming cabinet meeting on Sunday. Once approved, Zini will officially assume the position.

In a letter sent by the committee chairman, former Supreme Court President Asher Gronis, the committee noted that it had examined the integrity and suitability of the appointment and found no obstacle to approving Zini’s candidacy.

During its deliberations, the committee heard from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, outgoing Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, his deputy, and Chief of Staff Major General Eyal Zamir. The panel also considered submissions from the public and defense officials, including four former heads of the Shin Bet.

Among the issues discussed was Zini’s meeting with the Prime Minister at the Tze’elim base, where the offer was made. It was claimed that the procedure did not follow the usual protocol with the Chief of Staff. The committee determined that Zini consulted with the Chief of Staff shortly afterward, and Zamir did not remove him from his IDF post—an action the committee viewed as confirmation that no procedural flaw had occurred.
