In his letter, Netanyahu acknowledged the public and ethical debate generated by his trial, writing that while he is committed to proving his innocence, he believes “the public interest dictates otherwise.” He framed the pardon request as a step toward national reconciliation and reducing societal tensions.
The request is now being reviewed by the Pardons Department at the Ministry of Justice, which will collect opinions from relevant authorities before passing them to the President’s legal advisor for further review. The Office of the President emphasized that Herzog recognizes the significance of the request and will consider it carefully once all opinions are received.
The documents include a detailed submission from Netanyahu’s legal team and a personal letter from the Prime Minister. Earlier this month, President Herzog also received a letter from US President Donald Trump urging consideration of a pardon, calling the prosecution “political” and “unjustified.”
