Moving Bris Milah Celebrated Following Major Purim Celebration in Lima, Peru

Twenty-four hours of Purim joy and celebration swept through Lima, Peru, as hundreds of community members, travelers, and local Jews who were unable to return home due to security concerns and flight cancellations gathered at the Chabad House to mark the Yom Tov • Read More

For 38 years, Chabad’s vibrant presence in Peru has been led by the Rebbe’s Shluchim, the late Rabbi Shneur Zalman Blumenfeld A”H and his wife, Mrs. Shternah Sarah, may she live and be well, providing guidance and support to the Jewish community. Purim activities extend far beyond the Chabad House walls. In a special initiative, the Shluchim visited the four major prisons in the capital region, delivering Purim packages, reading Megilah, and joy to Jewish inmates, ensuring that every Jew feels the holiday spirit. These prison visits continue throughout the year, totaling five annual trips that bring hope and celebration to incarcerated Jews.

Chabad in Peru also maintains close contact with dozens of Jews across the country, providing assistance as needed and distributing Matzah, kosher food, Hanukkah menorahs, calendars, and other essentials to help maintain Jewish life. On the eve of Purim, 1,000 Purim packages were sent directly to Jewish households throughout Lima and its surrounding areas.

The centerpiece of the celebration was held at the Chabad House, where a large festive tent accommodated the sizable crowd for Megillah readings and the holiday feast. Throughout the day, hundreds continued to stream in to fulfill the Mitzvos of mishloach manot, matanos l’evyonim, and the Purim feast. Readings took place every hour, including in private homes for those unable to attend, and at the Jewish nursing home Bikur Cholim, where dozens of elders joined in the festivities.

A particularly moving moment occurred during the Purim meal, when one participant embraced the Bris of Avraham and, the following day, a Bris Milah was performed with great joy and celebration.

Looking ahead, preparations for Pesach are already underway, with 350 Jews expected to attend the central Seder in Lima, uniting in community and brotherhood. “Our blessed activities will only continue to grow,” said Chabad leaders in Peru, “but we are confident that next Purim we will celebrate in the Third Beis Hamikdash with our Rebbe, King Moshiach.”
