An open letter from Rabbi Zushe Abelsky, Senior Shliach of Moldova:

    Dear friends,

I am writing to you during a difficult time in Moldova and Eastern Europe.

As you all know, Russia has taken the unfortunate step of invading Ukraine and declaring war in Europe. This is creating a lot of stress for the Jewish community in Moldova, as the fighting is right in our backyard.

Ukrainians have already begun to flee Ukraine, and we expect that to continue. The Jewish community in Moldova is preparing to welcome these refugees with open arms and warm meals.

Thank G-d everyone in our community is safe for now, but the war is already creating difficulties for our community. In Moldova, we import much of our Kosher food from Ukraine. This is already becoming difficult, and we expect this to become more and more difficult as the war rages on.

It is also possible that Russia will capture Transnistria, which is a part of Moldova on the Ukrainian border. This will create further turmoil in the region and in Moldova.

We are gravely concerned about the well-being of our community during a time of such hardship. We are facing a lot of unknowns and we are preparing for a time of hardship. We are praying for a swift and peaceful outcome, but unfortunately that does not seem likely.

As refugees continue to pour over the border and into Moldova, our community will do everything we can to give them warm meals, a place to stay, and anything else they need. But we need your help. Please donate here to help provide the financial assistance needed to help these refugees.

    Sincerely,

    Rabbi Zushe Abelsky
