A powerful explosion struck the Shahid Rajaei Port in Bandar Abbas, a southern Iranian city on the shores of the Strait of Hormuz, on Saturday.
In recent months, shipments containing chemicals used for rocket fuel — including for medium-range missiles launched at Israel in the past year — reportedly arrived at the port.
According to Iranian media reports, at least four people were killed and 516 others were injured in the blast, with several in serious condition. A senior Israeli source stated that Israel was not involved in the incident.
Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said on Saturday afternoon that “a final announcement will take time,” noting that preliminary information indicates containers stored at a corner of the port — possibly containing chemicals — exploded.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, as authorities work to determine whether negligence, an accident, or another factor triggered the deadly blast.
